Description: The Model 48 was introduced in 1959 as the .22 Mag counterpart in the K-22 series of K-framed .22 revolvers. Despite being produced after 1957 when all S&W revolvers went from “named” models to numbered models, the Model 48 was also given the title of “K-22 Masterpiece Magnum Rimfire. The other K-22s, the Model 17 and 18, had previously been sold under the names K-22 Masterpiece and K-22 Combat Masterpiece respectively. The K-22 series were built around the concept of serving as a less expensive means of practicing shooting rather than shooting the more expensive .38 ammo from the K-38 Masterpiece (Model 14) and K-38 Combat Masterpiece (Model 15). In a sense, the Model 48 can be considered as a less expensive alternative to the Model 19 in 357 Magnum. The serial number, according to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 4th Edition, indicates this gun was manufactured in 1982. It is in good condition. While small rust spots were present, these have been cleaned. The only notable spot of bluing loss is the muzzle wear at the front of the barrel and a couple of very small spots inside the trigger guard. The bore is very clean with no rust or pitting. The barrel is the long 8-3/8” version, which is the longest barrel that can be found on the 48. The rear sight has been replaced with a B-square scope base upon which a Tasco Pro Point red dot scope is mounted. Overall, with the scope and the long barrel, this revolver would make a nice squirrel or varmint gun.
