Description:
A late 18th / early 19th century Irish flintlock pistol by Willett of Dublin, cane handle walnut stock, split along the right front, the lockplate is engraved 'Willett' and top of barrel engraved 'Willett Dublin'. Fine engraved round trigger guard, engraving on back strap, missing ramrod, heavy octagon 7 inch barrel with front and rear sights, rear of barrel is engraved in rings, brass or silver ring inlay, engraved swan neck cock. The stock is stamped 230 and KD-3513 is stamped on the top of the barrel as required by the British when all firearms were required to be registered. Two stage action works properly. Overall length is 12 inches.
The Willett family of gunmakers are recorded as operating from 22, and later 23, Eustace Street, Dublin from 1781 to 1810. Robert Willett is recorded at Bath Street, Irishtown in 1834-35.
