Description:

Antique FIRST CONTRACT Winchester LEE NAVY Rifle

Straight Pull Bolt Action 6mm Lee Rifle Made in 1897

Here we present an antique First Contract Winchester Lee Navy straight pull bolt action rifle, manufactured in 1897 in New Haven, Connecticut. This rifle was designed by James Paris Lee. The Lee Model 1895 was a straight-pull bolt-action magazine-fed rifle adopted by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps in 1895. It was high tech at the time with its small projectile moving quickly as opposed to the very large .45 and .50 caliber projectiles of the era moving rather slowly. The first naval contract for the M1895 was given to Winchester for 10,000 rifles in January 1896 (serials 1–9999). The Navy's official designation for the Lee Straight-Pull rifle was the "Lee Rifle, Model of 1895, caliber 6-mm”. The 6mm U.S.N. or Lee Navy Cartridge was also used in the Navy version of the Colt–Browning Model 1895 machine gun. By 1894, the U.S. Navy desired to adopt a modern small-bore, smokeless powder rifle in keeping with other first-line naval powers. Naval authorities decided that the new cartridge should be adaptable to both rifles and machine guns. As the military forces began adopting smaller and smaller caliber rifles with higher velocity cartridges, U.S. naval authorities decided to leapfrog developments by adopting a semi-rimless cartridge in 6-mm caliber, with a case capable of holding a heavy charge of smokeless powder.

This one features some interesting adaptations. The stock has been sporterized and shaped to a Schnabel fore end. The front sight is a large, shop-made post and bead with a large, skeletonized hood. The rear sight is an adjustable aperture sight with an extra fine alternate peep in the cleaning rod compartment. This front and rear sight make a very nice combination. This guy knew what he was doing. This rifle is also equipped with a nice leather sling.

The overall condition is very good. The blue finish has been nicely redone. The markings are clear. The stock is in decent shape. There is a repair at the wrist. The bore is in nice shape with strong rifling. The action is strong.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
