BRITISH Antique SELBY PORTSMOUTH Officer’s Sword
Circa 1830 Lion’s Head Pipeback Naval Sword
Here we present an antique British Naval Officer’s Sword, made circa 1830 by Selby of Portsmouth. This stately piece has a distinctive rounded “pipe” running the entire length of the spine, lending strength. The tip has a long segment on the back side that would have been sharp like the cutting edge. The blade is beautifully acid etched on either side with about 50% coverage. The left side bears the name “SELBY/Portsmouth”, as well as a British crown over a tangled anchor. The right side bears a lion and unicorn holding up a coat of arms. The pommel is in the shape of a lion’s head. The guard also bears a crown over a naval anchor. Grip is white rayskin, wrapped with wire. The leather scabbard is original, with heavy brass fittings. The throat of the scabbard is marked “Crown/SELBY/PORTSMOUTH”.
Overall condition is very good. The blade looks as though this sword was used in a fight or two, with a few dings. The etching is clear and legible. The grip is complete. There was once a hinged piece to the guard that is no longer present. The leather on the scabbard is original and in near fine condition. Here is a fantastic sword with lots of history. Imagine the places this sword has been!
