Description:
Nice example of the Spur Trigger S&W Model 1, 3rd Issue revolver in .22 Caliber.  This one has the scarce 2 11/16" Barrel instead of the standard 3 3/16" Barrel.  Because of the shorter length, S&W couldn't fit their roll die address on the top rib because the front sight gets in the way so they moved it to the left profile.  See Photo.  These 3rd Issues were made from 1868 to 1881 in their own serial range 1-130,000 approx.  This one is in the 76,000 range which would date to approximately the mid-1870's.  It has all matching assembly numbers on the frame, cylinder, and barrel and the grips are numbered to the serial number on the butt.   Overall Condition Grades to NRA Antique Fine Plus.  Frame has 85% original blue while the Cylinder has mostly toned to a smooth brown patina with 40% thinning blue remaining...mixed throughout.  The barrel shows 35% bright original blue towards the rear and in the protected areas with the front and more exposed surfaced turned to a smooth grey/ brown.  Sharp barrel markings on left hand side with tiny patent dates.  The font height of the barrel address is smaller than the head of a pin which was tough to photograph but we got it.  See Photo. Hammer shows 75% nice case colors. Nice original Rosewood Grips with 97% original piano varnish with just a few light handling marks and a small area of loss.  Noce chips, cracks or repairs.  The barrel latches up tightly with no wiggle.  Nice action.  Good++ to Very Good Bore.  Nice example of a scarcer short barreled S&W pocket revolver from the 1870's...and a blued one!  Antique Pre-1898.  Please note that these early tip-up S&W's Model One Revolvers were THE FIRST CARTRIDGE GUN IN THE WORLD and chambered a cartridge that would basically develop into the .22 short caliber which will fit in the chambers.  HOWEVER, these weapons were built from the late 1850's to the early 1880's during the black powder era and were not designed to handle the high pressures of Modern Smokeless Powder Ammunition.
