Description:

Rare COLT Model 1855 .44 Caliber REVOLVING RIFLE

Fantastic Civil War Period Repeating Rifle!

Here we present an antique Colt Model 1855 Revolving Rifle, manufactured circa 1856 in Hartford, Connecticut. This is a true rarity from Samuel Colt with a few hundred thought to have been made. These resemble the more common Colt Model 1855 “Root” revolver with the side-mounted hammer, fluted cylinder, solid frame, and cylinder arbor pin inserted in the rear of the frame. These were named for Elisha K. Root, Colt’s star superintendent from 1849 to 1862. He took up the mantle of Colt’s president upon the death of Samuel Colt in 1862 and was in that post until his own death late in 1865.

The Colt revolving rifles and carbines were useful and handy in a day when most were using single shot rifles. These were utilized in small quantities by state militias during the American Civil War.

This one is in .44 caliber and features a 27-inch barrel. Sights are dual leaf with a notch sight in between.

The overall condition is very good. The iron parts have a nice, even patina. The markings are mostly legible. The numbers match. The walnut stock has been repaired at the wrist. The bore is in good shape, dark with good rifling. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. This is a rare opportunity to own one of Colt’s most distinctive designs and one that would have been in use during the American Civil War!
