Description:

Brit NAPOLEONIC WARS Flintlock BROWN BESS Musket

With Regimental Markings!

Here we present an antique Brown Bess 1793 Pattern Flintlock Musket made in Birmingham, England circa 1795. This pattern of Brown Bess is the same that fought Napoleon Bonaparte in numerous iconic battles, as well as the United States and their American Indian Allies during the War of 1812. This pattern may also correctly be called the “India Pattern” since the Honorable East India Company was the entity responsible for this update to the gun that had been around since 1722. When war with France loomed on the horizon, the British Board of Ordnance diverted these muskets from the EIC contract to supply the war effort.

This musket is unit marked on the stock “LM17B+No365” (unit name, regimental number, company, gun number). The lock is marked with the royal cypher, a crown over “G.R.”, standing for Georgius Rex or King George with a much smaller crown and broad arrow. The tail of the lock is marked “TOWER”. Proof marks are stamped into the left side of the barrel, a “Crown/GR” and Birmingham’s crossed scepters. “Crown/23” inspector marking can be found on the barrel just behind the frizzen and “Crown/22” can be found inside the lock next to the initials “TS”. The storekeeper’s mark is on the left stock flat.

Overall condition is very good. The steel and brass parts have a mixed patina. The markings are clear. The stock is smooth and solid. The bore is smooth and dusty. The action is strong. There could be some adjustment of the sear spring to make it just right. Overall, a wonderful example of a British musket that would have seen action in any number of places defending British interests from the colonies to Waterloo.
