Description:

UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD Pieper SxS Hammer SHOTGUN

Shotgun Used By the “RAILROAD BULLS”!

Here we present a Henri Pieper Double Barrel Side by Side Shotgun, made at the turn of the 20th Century in Belgium. Henri Pieper was a German born gunmaker in Belgium. He began in Liege in 1866 under the business name “Anciens Etablissements Pieper”. The rapid growth of his early business was partly due to an excellent decision to purchase a barrel factory in Nessonvaux. Some of Remington’s finest double shotguns of the time have the maker’s mark of “HP” on them from this factory.

This particular double barrel 12 gauge has quite the history to go along with it. Railroad Bulls, a term for railroad police was popularized by hobos and ne’er do wells riding the rails during the Great Depression. From the 1840s through today, the arms they have carried reflected the needs of their times. The original railroad bulls were private detectives hired typically from the agency of Allan Pinkerton. In the years before the turn of the century, most railroads took the logical step and formed their own private police agencies rather than hiring the Pinkertons for their heavy lifting. In 1878, the Santa Fe Railroad formed its own police force with 100 hired guns headed by a local town marshal who became the railroad’s first chief of police. That lawman was Bat Masterson!

By the 1940s, the railway police across the country numbered more than 7,000 officers protecting over 240,000 miles of tracks. During both World Wars, railway police guarded bridges and tunnels from saboteurs. The “Bulls” were also pressed into service helping the Army look after the transport of more than 425,000 German and Italian prisoners of war that were transported to 511 camps around the country by rail during WWII.

With the huge number of railway police departments coast to coast from the 1870s through current day today, almost every model handgun, shotgun, and lever action rifle has been issued at one time or another. Company owned weapons were marked either on the stock or the frame, or quite often, both, as this one is. The history that goes along with this particular shotgun will likely never be known, but I can tell you that is has seen a lot in its day!
The overall condition is very good. The iron parts are gray. The markings are clear. The numbers match. The stock shows some wear from use and remains solid. The bores are semi-bright and smooth. The actions are excellent.
