Description:
Serial #15437, .476 Enfield, 5 1/2" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a splendid, British proofed, “PALL MALL", and “.476 CAL." marked revolver, that retains 75-80% of the original blue finish with some fading to streaked pewter gray along the barrel and cylinder. Silvering is present along the high and projecting edges with scattered areas of dark freckling, and most of the original bright fire blue remains on the trigger and hammer. The checkered, hard rubber grips are in fine shape with mild age discoloration, and some flattening of the points. The lock-up is tight, and the action functions flawlessly. The Army & Navy Cooperative Society Ltd. ledger lists this revolver on page 140: “Colt Double Action SN 15437 plain, .476 Sold for £3.10.0 July 16, 1885 to Major Belgrave". Dacres Thomas Charles Belgrave was born into a storied British naval family on June 28, 1847 at Simons Town, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. Dacres was educated at Eton, and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on July 27, 1866 (serving in the 97th and 43rd Regiments of Foot). He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1869, Captain in 1874, and Major on June 11, 1884, serving as adjutant, 1st. Bn. Royal West Kent Regiment. In May of 1885 he retired from the adjutancy (he purchased this revolver two months later), and joined the Soudan Frontier Field Force, serving in combat at Ginnis on December 30, 1885 where he won the British Egypt Medal and the Khedive’s Star (as an aside, Ginnis was the last battle fought in which the British troops wore their famous red coats). This very revolver almost certainly accompanied him on the campaign. Belgrave retired with the honorary rank of Lt. Colonel on August 11, 1886, however he was named Professor of Landscape Drawing at the Royal Military College four years later (he had exhibited his artwork at the Royal Academy, and the Royal Society of British Artists between 1880 and 1890). In 1900 he was still listed as a professor at the RMA, Woolwich, with subsequent WW1 service as the military representative to the Wimborne & Cranborne Rural District Tribunal, where he considered applications for exemption from compulsory military service based on essential occupations. Belgrave passed away on June 2, 1930, just shy of his 83rd birthday. This is a fantastic opportunity to own a rare .476 Model 1878 Colt, in excellent condition, with an amazing association and history. Antique
