Built by the Austrian Master Johann Fanzoj, “the Michelangelo of Ferlach,” recipient of the Royal Warrant of Austria located at Griesgasse 3 Ferlach 9170 Austria.
Planning a dangerous game hunt to Africa? If you want to impress your PH, this rifle will do it – maker, action, and caliber. This is the real deal!
The action is the time-tested dual Purdey under-lug locking system with a third locking Greener crossbolt with automatic ejectors configured into two best-built seven-pin sidelocks, with locking screw for the action screw, locking screws for the bushed strikers, profiled sideclips, intercepting sears, cocking indicators, manual tang mounted safety with the word SAFE inscribed in gold, and a checkered action top lever. The strength of the action is enhanced with a bolstered receiver.
This is a best gun: the underside of the receiver is gracefully contoured to meet the stock and is fully engraved with scrolls and case-hardened colors. The two triggers are contoured with checkered faces and the front trigger is articulated. The 24 ½” blued barrels wear a profiled quarter rib with hand-filed matting between smooth borders showing makers name and city inscribed in gold, Johann Fanzoj Ferlach Austria” and terminating with a pleasing cone shape transition to the barrels – another best gun feature.
The front sight is a small bead mounted on a pleasing cone-shape ramp that matches the cone-shaped terminus of the profiled quarter rib. The rear sight, mounted on the quarter rib, is an express sight with one fixed leaf and two folding leaves inscribed 200 and 300. The fixed leaf has a shallow V notch preferred by professional hunters for fast sight alignment when hunting dangerous game. All three leaves have vertical sight lines.
The dark English walnut stock has great figure for a rifle needing a strong stock to withstand recoil. The figure comprises contrasting dark and light parallel streaks that are not only attractive, but also set in the correct direction for stress. It is shaped with a pistol grip with horn cap and drop points, or tear-drops. Checkering is point pattern with double borders and built for the right-handed shooter with a European cheekpiece on the left side, carved with a quality shadowline and an unfluted comb.
The forearm is semi-beavertail with a sculptured channel on the underside which is very well shaped, scooped out to allow for the inset Anson and Deeley release and surrounded by wrap-around checkering which is perfectly cut with double borders. The forearm iron meets the action with a pleasing curved design that accentuates the curved mating with the stock on the underside – another sign of a best gun. Diamonds are 24 lpi.
Length of pull is 14 3/4” over the classic 1” Silvers red-rubber recoil pad. Weight is 11 lbs, 2 oz. It is presented with the maker’s Oak and Leather case and includes a second metal locking case for air travel made by the maker.
Condition: Built in 1970 by Johann, it carries an early three-digit serial number, 495. It is in excellent plus condition with a few light handling marks.

About the Maker:
Ferlach, a small town in the south of Austria, is the pantheon of Austrian gunmaking (the art of gunmaking) and dates back to the early 16th century. For more than nine generations the Fanzoj family has played a significant role in shaping this proud tradition, their gunmaking family going back to 1790. The firm Fanzoj stepped out of anonymity and into history in 1906 when it established itself as a purveyor to the Imperial court of Franz Joseph I.
The firm took the name of Johann Fanzoj when Johann became a master gunmaker in 1960. Each year only a small number of exclusive guns and rifles leave Johann Fanzoj´s workshop, amazing works of art that have propelled his name into the worldwide elite of specialty and boutique makers of best guns.
In 2008, the Johann Fanzoj company invested in a new facility with state-of-the-art manufacturing integrating all work steps with a commitment to continue the highest quality while still meeting the increasingly demand of their high-profile clientele.
With the new facility, Johann Fanzoj became a Manufactur combining centuries-old knowledge of traditional techniques with state-of-the-art manufacturing technology. About the cartridge
The .500/465 Nitro Express is a large bore centerfire rifle cartridge developed by Holland & Holland and introduced in 1907. The .500/465 NE is one of several rounds (including the .470 NE, .475 NEs, .475 No. 2 NE and .476 NE all with comparable performance) developed as a replacement for the .500/450 NE following the British Army ban in 1907 of .450 caliber ammunition in India and the Sudan. Holland & Holland created the .500/465 Nitro Express by necking down the .500 Nitro Express 3¼ in. The .500/465 NE is designed for use in single-shot and double rifles. From Barnes Cartridges of the World: The 465 is rated as an excellent all-around number for Africa, including heavy or dangerous game. It is still tops for African game. Only one bullet weight was/is used, but those 480-grain slugs are available in solid, softpoint, and metal-covered split types. Components are available from U.S. suppliers. Bullets are available from A-Square, Barnes and Woodleigh; and Bertram and HDS offer cases. A-Square and Kynoch have offered this ammunition. Champlin Arms has 20 round boxes of 480 gr. Woodleigh Welded core solids for about $9.00 a round. Hendershots Sporting Goods is another source.
With the bullet weight of 480 gr. (various types), the factory load gives a muzzle velocity of 2150 ft/sec with an energy of 4930 ft/lbs
