Description:

BURNSIDE Rifle 1865 CONTRACT Model Spencer Carbine

Post-Civil War Repeating Rifle

Here we present a Burnside Rifle Co. 1865 Contract Model Spencer Carbine, manufactured circa 1865. On June 27, 1864, the Burnside Rifle Co. entered into a contract with the Ordnance Dept. to manufacture about 30,500 Spencer Model carbines with deliveries completed by Aug. 31, 1865. With the changes directed to be made to the carbines, deliveries did not start until April 15, 1865, and they continued until the end of October, with a 30,496 M1865 Spencer carbines being delivered. In total, the Burnside Company made just over 34,000 of this carbine. They paid Spencer Repeating Rifle Co. a royalty of 50 cents for each carbine delivered to the Ordnance Dept., and $1 was paid for the 4,000 Spencer carbines sold to military individuals and civilians. This Burnside Contract Model 1865 is a great example of a weapon used by the US Federal Cavalry after the close of the Civil War and would make a great addition to highlight any military display or rifle collection!

This carbine is marked “MODEL 1865/ SPENCER REPEATING RIFLE/PAT’S MARCH 6 1860/MANUF’D AT PROV. R.I./ BY BURNSIDE RIFLE CO”. The number “105” is marked on the right side of the frame. Two clear government inspector cartouches bear the initials “GC” and “HEV”, likely for George Curtis and Henry E. Valentine.

The overall condition is good. The original finish has given way to a dark patina. The lock and a bit of the barrel have seen some heavy polishing. The markings remain clear. The case colors are still present on the breech block. The walnut stock shows the hard use wear that you would expect while remaining solid. The bore is sharp and bright with the exception of about the first inch of muzzle, which is quite pitted. The action remains strong.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 20 inches.

Caliber: .56-50
