Winchester Model 1873 Saddle Ring Carbine in 44-40 that is well above average for a saddle gun. It comes with a factory letter. Standard 3rd Model Carbine with 20" barrel, full magazine, carbine semi-crescent buttplate with trapdoor, ladder sight, and saddle ring. These 1873 SRC's were often part of a working cowboy's rig, often kept out in the elements and treated as a tool. This one has a nice combination of wear and condition with some good original blue in the protected areas...especially around the saddle ring. It also has exceptionally nice wood with its original oil finish that is still proud of the metal having never been cleaned, sanded, or redone. Serial Number is in the 495,000 range and was made in 1895. Antique, Pre-1898. According to the factory letter, it went into the warehouse as a Carbine in 44 Caliber on August 19, 1895 and shipped on Sept. 5 1895. Nice markings include the 2 line barrel address with Henry's 1860 and King's 1866 Patent Dates. Top tang of the frame is marked "MODEL 1873" bracketed by 2 fleur de lis. The brass carrier still has a nice clear "44 CAL" in script while the top of the barrel has the "44 W.C.F." stamp at 12 O'clock behind the rear sight. The hammer has the Victorian style dipped border around the hammer checkering. The ladder sight is marked 200-900 yards with no "1873" at the top which is proper as the date was removed shortly after the Model 1892 was introduced (remember, by this time the Models 1873, 1892, and 1894 carbines were all sharing the same rear sight) These are all original and correct for an 1895 vintage 3rd Model 1873 carbine.
Overall Condition Grades to NRA Antique Very Good Plus. The left side of the receiver has about 35% original blue which is strong around the saddle ring staple that displays a nice wear shadow from the scabbard ring. The pictures dont show it well, but there is still speckled original blue towards the rear of the left side plate. What saves this original blue from being worn away in a leather scabbard is the saddle ring staple which keeps the leather off of the metal in this area. From there, the blue is more or less in the protected areas...under the flare of the receiver, around the side plates. The right side of the frame has maybe 10% original blue around the plates, under the flares by the wood, as well as some speckled original blue out in some of the open areas...even a bit on the right sideplate. . The lower tang also has a lot of original finish remaining. Hammer shows faded traces of original case colors. There is also some original blue around the sights on the barrel and between the barrel and magazine tube. The rest of the metal has aged to a silver-grey patina that is a tad frosty. In actual appearance, this carbine is more smooth and even than what my hyper-active digitial camera is showing in the photos. The wood is in Fine Condition with nice wood to metal fit that is still proud over the metal. The action is in good order and the bore is fairly typical of a 19th century black powder era cowboy carbine...it's Fair Plus to Good Minus with the rifling all intact with scattered pits...but fortunately, no rings or bulges which turn up quite often on these carbines. If you're looking for a decent example of an 1873 carbine with nice wood and some original blue, this is a good one!
