Description:
BRACE of JOHN COLLIS of OXFORD FLINTLOCK Pistols

ENGRAVED and CASED 18th Century Conceal Carry Guns

Here we present a Matched Pair of Antique John Collis of Oxford Flintlock Pistols, made circa 1782-1798 in England. This type of pistol was very popular from the 18th and into the 19th Centuries, in Europe, as well as the colonies. They could be stowed in the top of a boot, the belt, waistband or even a large pocket. They were, of course, made primarily for self-defense, and very well would tell stories if they could. Much happened in Britain and its colonies abroad during this period.

This specimen is marked “COLLIS” and “OXFORD” on the frame. John Collis is known to have made flintlock pistols during this period, possibly for officers in the British military. He began his career apprenticed to William Emms, finishing in 1764. He is known for his quality work in the relatively small gun-making community in Oxford during this period.

These pistols come cased in walnut with a red felt lining. The case is fitted for each as well as the accompanying powder flask and bullet mold. It would make a great display.
The overall condition of this set is near fine. The iron parts have an even gray patina. The markings are clear. The grips are in great shape. The bores are smooth and clean. The actions are excellent. The case and accoutrements are likewise in fine condition.
