The number "2" also appears on the left side bottom of barrel lug. Inscription remains clear and legible with no wear, as do the 2-line New York City barrel address and the patent marking on the left side of the frame. PROVENANCE: Official Civil War records were obtained from the National Archives through an independent researcher. James W. Eldridge enlisted in Columbus, OH on July 16, 1862 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 95th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company A. The 95th wasanized at Camp Chase, OH, on August 19, 1862 and received its marching orders the next day, departing for Lexington, KY. A few days later, the unit had an ill-fated affair at Richmond, KY, on August 30, 1862, where 8 members were killed, 47 wounded and 600 captures. Lieutenant Eldridge was among the 600 captured and immediately paroled on August 30, 1862. On October 4, 1862, he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant. In a letter dated Dec. 6, 1862, Lieutenant Eldridge resigned his commission "for the benefit of the Reg't and especially Co. A" citing that "I am wholly incompetent" and "wholly unfit" to perform duties of an officer. His resignation was accepted on Dec. 10, 1862, but his feelings for serving his country did not totally subside, for on August 10, 1863, he enlisted as a private with Co. B, 11th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, at the Benton Barracks. On Oct. 19, 1863, he was transferred to Co. L while at Fort Laramie. He fought and survived the remainder of the Civil War and into the Indian War era in the Dakota territory with this unit, being promoted to Sergeant Nov.1, 1863, to Quartermaster Sergeant Aug. 1, 1865, and finally to 1st Sergeant May 5, 1866. He also was "in arrest" for the period of July 1864 to October 1864. He was discharged from service on Aug. 6, 1866. He was granted an invalid pension on Oct. 24, 1888 due to several illnesses caused by his service time. According to the pension records, he passed away on Aug. 29, 1907. I have a three ring binder containing all of the muster rolls, parole and pension records, medical records, and unfortunately not very legible information regarding his arrest period, plus regimental histories, that will be provided with the firearm to the purchaser.
