Description:
The Model 686 is the de-facto standard of the Smith & Wesson medium-frame revolver line. It has been used for every purpose from self-defense to target shooting and by a great many people. Like its blued finish cousin, the Model 586, the 686 was designed to correct then existent strength issues with its predecessor, the stainless K-frame Model 66 by using the new, slightly larger L-frame. That Smith & Wesson succeeded with the 686 can be attested to by the fact that the model has been in continuous production since 1980. The example here is a Dash-4 version produced most likely in 1994. It features a 4-inch, full-lug barrel, stainless finish, and a red ramp front sight insert. The trigger is a 0.312-inch smooth combat trigger and the 686 also has a 0.375-inch semi-target hammer. The revolver has been equipped with Hogue “Monogrip” grips, i.e. a one-piece rubber grip with finger grooves in place. The revolver has seen some use given the powder burns on the front of the cylinder. However, the 686 is otherwise in excellent shape for its age. The rear sight is not dinged or damaged in any way. The front sight has the standard red ramp insert. Despite the powder burns on the cylinder the bore is quite clean. Mechanically the revolver has a very light single-action pull.
