Description:
The Smith & Wesson Model No.1 was the legendary firm's first metallic cartridge firearm, beginning the long line of famous Smith & Wesson revolvers. The Model No.1 was a commercial success and remained in production for over 24 years with three distinct model "issues". The Model No.1 Second Issue revolver featured a 7-shot non-fluted cylinder, a 3 & 3/16ths inch octagonal barrel, a square butt grip frame with Rosewood grips, and a factory mixture of blued and silver plated finishes. This particular example is a "Second Issue" weapon made during the U.S. Civil War, circa 1863. It is an attractive all-matching gun, and would be all-original if not for the refinished blue parts which appear to have been done quite a long time ago. The original factory silver plating on the frame and grip straps still looks very nice with a beautiful aged patina, showing only some light plating loss and thinning on the high edges and in some small spots. The upper barrel hinge on this S&W is still intact, a weak spot on these guns that is often cracked or repaired. The original Rosewood grips are in great shape, free from any cracks, chips, or repairs, and still showing some of the original factory varnish. The bore in this S&W is average like most No.1's we encounter, while there is still rifling throughout the barrel there is also scattered shallow pitting. The action on this No.1 still works and appears to be in-time, however there is some play in the barrel assembly. We would not recommend shooting this antique. This very attractive S&W No.1 would be a great addition to any antique weapons collection as an example of one of America's most famous gunmaker's first cartridge revolver.
