Description:
DESCRIPTION: Colt 1862 Pocket Police 36 Caliber percussion revolver, 1st year production, serial number 585 matches everywhere except cylinder, which is unmarked (typical of the early ones), having traces of a special order nickel finish and also special order ivory grips, 5-shot cylinder, desirable 6.5" barrel, inscribed "W. G. Ely" on the bottom grip strap.
PROVENANCE: William Grosvenor Ely was born in Killingly, CT in 1836. He graduated from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island in 1857, where he trained as a civil engineer and was subsequently employed by Rogers Locomotive Works in New Jersey. He was sent to Cuba to represent their interests. At the start of the Civil War in April 1861, he returned to Norwich, CT to enlist and was commissioned on 4/27/1861 as a 1st Lieutenant in the 1st Connecticut Infantry. On 5/28/1861 he was promooted to Capt. and Capt. Ely was present with this unit at First Manassas (Bull Run) that summer. On 9/13/1861 he was transferred to the 6th Connecticut Infantry and promoted to Major. He fought with that unit for almost a year, being promoted to Full Colonel and given the command of the 18th Connecticut Infantry on 8/22/1862.  This unit's first major battle was at Winchester, VA in June of 1863, in which he and most of the unit were captured. He was sent to Libby Prison, Richmond, VA and then the prison in Macon, GA, where he was paroled on 3/22/1864. He returned to his unit and was involved in further fighting in Virginia, becoming wounded at the Battle of Lynchburg 6/18/1864, suffering a throat would which caused him to resign from the disability. On 3/12/1865 he was promoted to Brigadier General by Brevet for "meritorious services during the war." General Ely lived to be 69 years old and passed away 11/13/1906 in Norwich, CT. He is buried at the Yantic Cemetary in Norwich. All documentation will be provided to the purchaser.
CONDITION:  Overall metal finish, including the rare early iron grip straps, is a medium patina with traces of the original nickel finish remaining in a few spots on the cylinder only. There are numerous dings in the metal and some spots of light surface pinprick pitting but nothing major. The original ivory grips show wear and loss. Hammer spring is strong and has all positive clicks. Cylinder indexes perfectly every time. All nipples are original and intact with no damage. Bore is very good with sharp rifling and typical scattered black powder pitting, no bulges and no deep pits, could benefit from further cleaning. Original dovetailed front sight is present and the loading rod functions properly. Overall grades NRA Antique Very Good.
