Description:
DESCRIPTION: Colt 1860 Army 44 cal percussion revolver made 1862, 6-shot cylinder, 8" barrel, blued and case hardened finish, brass trigger guard, steel grip strap, walnut grips, serial number 44121. Serial numbers of direct hit revolvers in the Springfield Research Survey include 44006 to Co A Loudoun County Rangers, 44132 to Co I, 3rd Michigan Cavalry, and 44160 to Co F, 19th New York Cavalry, so this one could have ended up with a trooper in any of those units. Revolver has a full set of sub inspector markings, including a B on the left side of the barrel, an H on the backstrap, a D on the trigger guard, a D and a T on the cylinder, and a T on the right side of the barrel. Main inspector cartouches are PB for Pomeroy Booth on the left grip and JT for John Taylor on the right grip. Serial numbers all match on the grip, frame, cylinder, trigger guard, barrel, wedge and cylinder pin. Typical of many of these Civil War used revolvers, the bottoms of the grips have been hollowed out to allow for a lanyard for ease of carry and quicker access by the trooper. No doubt this one saw lots of action during the Civil War. Shield is cut for shoulder stock and bottom of grip has the indentation to do so.
CONDITION: Overall metal is a mix of dark gray and patina with typical surface dings and scratches but no pitting. Bore is near excellent with sharp rifling and some shine, no rings or bulges and no deep pits, was well-taken care of for the past 157 years. Original brass has never been cleaned and is a nice, mellow mustard patina. Besides the alteration for the lanyard, the grips show typical nicks, dings and scratches with a couple of small chips lost along the bottom edges, otherwise very good, never cleaned, never sanded or refinished. Barrel to frame fit is very tight. Cylinder has slight play both with hammer forward and hammer cocked. Hand is present but the spring might be damaged - cylinder will turn and rotate properly if barrel is level or pointed down, but if barrel is tilted up/back the cylinder will not rotate. Wedge screw is missing. Right side of barrel muzzle has some wear / small flat spot from riding many miles in the saddle and rubbing against something. Cylinder retains about 10% of the cylinder scene; patent markings are still clear. 5 nipples are original and one is a replacement, all are in good condition. Overall grades NRA Antique Good and is a solid representation of a Civil War used Colt 1860 Army.
