Look for the gold '55 Chevy road sign! ~Trades and offers are always considered~ Rare T.J. Van Sant, Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York, Massive Percussion Market Hunter's Shotgun, 8 Ga, mfg. ca. 1850. Large bore shotguns such as this were used by commercial hunters who harvested as much waterfowl as they could on a daily basis for re-sale to local hotels and markets. Often the guns would be mounted to the front of a small punt boat to absorb the tremendous weight and recoil they produced. This is a great example of an honest original market gun by a very rare American maker/retailer. The Damascus barrel measures 36 1/2" long and features a brass bead front sight. The underside of the barrel is Birmingham proofed and marked "FINE TWIST". The bore measures approximately .880" which would technically make it a 7 Gauge, or the magnum equivalent of an 8 Gauge. The breech measures 1 5/8" wide. The furniture is nicely engraved throughout and the lock is inscribed "TJ VANSANT / N.YORK". The only reference I can find for this name is T.J. Van Sant listed in the 1850 Federal Census as a "Merchant" in Williamsburg(h), Brooklyn, New York. Van Sant likely imported pieces of the gun, namely the barrel, and finished it himself. Overall the metal has a rich dark plum patina drifting to gray. The engraving is fine and sharp. The robust stock features a checkered wrist and retains an attractively untouched dark finish showing much wear and use. The gunner's initials "R.G.T." are period stamped into both sides of the buttstock. There is a sturdily repaired crack through the wrist which extends beneath the lock with some stable old cracks under the forearm and minor chipping along the edges of the forestock. Overall the wood remains solid and shows the typical wear and tear that guns of this nature saw. Engraved iron buttplate and triggerguard with Nickel Silver wedge escutcheons and original ramrod pipes. The brass tipped wood ramrod is a replacement which is too short to function but displays well. The action is crisp and functions perfectly and the nipple is a clean original. The bore is surprisingly excellent with smooth clean surfaces and just some minor scattered frosting. The gun weighs a hefty yet manageable 10 lbs 12 oz. A great representation of a big bore market gun by an extremely rare and unrecorded American maker.
