Look for the gold '55 Chevy road sign! ~Trades and offers are always considered~ Very Rare Early Production M1885 Jacob Harder, Lock Haven Pennsylvania, Over/Under Breechloading Double Barrel Rifle/Shotgun "Combination Gun", .44-40 WCF x 12 GA, mfg. 1885-1888. Jacob Harder was a prolific rifle maker throughout the percussion era from about 1840 until his retirement in 1888. During this time he manufactured many over/under and multi-barrel rifles however this 1885 patent model was his last and only breechloader design. It is not documented how many were made but I would guess fewer than 100. I have only seen a couple others, all of which were marked with serial numbers, caliber designations, and a updated barrel address accompanied by the June 9th 1885 patent date. This example is marked on the top barrel flat with the early "J. HARDER / LOCK HAVEN PA" stamp used on his percussion rifles with no other markings which would lead me to believe this is a very early production gun, possibly even a prototype. The octagon barrels measure 30" long and the rifle weighs a hefty 11 lbs 5 oz. The top barrel is rifled and chambered for the popular .44-40 Winchester centerfire cartridge while the bottom fires a 12 Gauge shotshell. Original front side base (blade missing) and fixed semi-buckhorn rear sight. The top of the barrel and tang are nicely engraved and the metal has a worn, untouched dark plum/gray patina. The stock is nicely figured and features a checkered wrist. It retains a very attractive dark untouched finish throughout. Aside from a small old chip at the toe of the buttstock which carried away the tip of the toeplate with it the wood remains solid with no further damage or repairs. Brass buttplate, toeplate, and triggerguard have all turned a dark mellow color with age. The triggerguard is bent slightly out of shape. Matching original hammers with original manual extractor (extractor handle is loose, screw may be stripped). Both actions are very strong and crisp however the left hammer just barely will not hold cock (should be an easy fix). Original rebounding firing pins function properly. The barrels open and lock up securely against the frame with no play whatsoever. The top barrel shows very strong and sharp rifling front to back with moderately scattered fine blackpowder frosting and the lower barrel shows moderate frosting with some fine pinprick surface pitting forming. A very rare and unique breechloading arm and a must-have for any American rifle collector. Jeremiah Johnson Trading sells antique firearms manufactured prior to 1899 and muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions only. For the purpose of these conditions the term "antique firearm" will hence include muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions.
