Description:
This is an extremely nice pre-ban Springfield National Match M1A rifle manufactured in 1985.  This M1A is in excellent condition inside and out, and quite a few U.S.G.I. parts were used in it's construction.  These early National Match models feature a Match-grade stamped 22" inch steel barrel, adjustable National Match front and rear sights with a hooded rear sight, a National Match mainspring guide, a Match-conditioned flash hider, a Match-conditioned gas tube, a two-stage Match-tuned trigger, and a special oil-finished and factory glass-bedded Walnut Match stock.  These were the most accurate rifle that Springfield made outside of their heavyweight Super Match.  These rifles quickly earned a reputation for being extremely accurate and very reliable right out of the box, and have become sought-after today by collectors and shooters alike.  Most people consider these pre-ban guns as the best that Springfield ever built, with a lot more attention paid to fit and finish than later guns.  The inclusion of original U.S.G.I. parts also makes them more desirable than later/current production.  This particular example is serial number 34,375 and is in beautiful condition overall.  It has likely spent the vast majority of it's life in storage.  It has a U.S.G.I. Winchester bolt, a U.S.G.I. Springfield op rod, and a U.S.G.I. H&R hammer and trigger parts.  The sights, barrel, and stock set are National Match/U.S.G.I., and the trigger housing is a Springfield commercial part.  The original factory Parkerizing rates 98%, with only some very minor handling marks visible under close inspection.  All of the factory stampings are crisp and clear.  The bore is this M1A is very good overall and should be an excellent shooter.  The rifling still shows really strong lands and grooves but there is some minor shallow pitting in spots, mainly in the grooves.  We gauged the throat and muzzle with an erosion gauge and the muzzle gauged a "2" and the throat a "1.5", meaning that the barrel for all intents and purposes is nearly-new in terms of erosion.  The U.S. Military would typically re-barrel a gun if the erosion got to 9 or 10, so this National Match barrel still has 95% of it's life left in it.  The stock on this Springfield is in excellent condition, free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major dings/dents.  The American Walnut is a very attractive light reddish brown, and outside of a few minor handling/storage marks is nearly perfect.  The factory glass bedding appears to be in perfect shape and really fits the action tightly.  All of the original U.S.G.I. stock hardware is intact and in place, including the hinged buttplate.  All of the controls on this M1A are in perfect working order, including the adjustable rear sight.  The action on this rifle is slick and smooth, and the bolt turns into battery perfectly without any slop.  The factory tuned trigger is exceptional, breaking at the 2nd stage with a light pull with no grit or excessive travel.  We have no doubt that this rifle will shoot just as well today as the day it left the factory 34 years ago.  It comes complete with an original Springfield factory 20-round magazine, in perfect working order.  If you have been looking for a National Match M1A here is your chance to get a sought-after "Pre-Ban" model made in 1985 at a great price.
