Description:
The Detective Special was one of the most popular conceal/defense revolvers of its time, and certainly one of the most famous. Unlike its Smith & Wesson counterpart the Chief’s Special (later the Model 36), the Detective Special held six shots instead of five. This Detective Special is marked on the backstrap with the acronym N.Y.S.T. which probably stands for New York State Trooper. The New York State Police adopted the Detective Special soon after its introduction and continued to use them well after World War 2. Some of the original finish is worn away but this is common with ex-law enforcement firearms. The bore is in excellent condition. The frame has the round butt configuration which was introduced by Colt in 1933 to make the revolver easier to conceal. Mechanically, the Detective Special is in superb condition and locks up perfectly. According to the Colt serial number database, this revolver left the factory in 1935. It would make a very nice addition to any Police Firearms or Colt collection.
