Description:
BOONSBORO MARYLAND Antique Musket by STONESIFER

John Stonesifer III Smoothbore Militia Musket

Here we present an antique Smoothbore Militia Musket by John Stonesifer III, made circa the 1840s in Boonsboro, Washington County, Maryland. John Stonesifer III appears to have been a third generation gunsmith. His great-grandfather, Johannes Eberhardt Steinseifer, emigrated from the German states on the ship Patience in 1749. The spelling of the last name changed upon arrival to Stonesifer and the next three generations would be named John rather than Johannes. One of John III’s grandfathers is known to have been a gunsmith and clockmaker during the American Revolutionary War. John III worked as a gunmaker until about 1860, when his son Christian Emory Stonesifer took over the business, though Christian would join the 1st Maryland Cavalry as a Lieutenant. John III also served as mayor of Boonsboro prior to the war, 1855-1856.

This musket is marked with a small federal eagle in the center of the lock with what appears to be a game bird at the front. The top of the barrel is marked “J. Stonesifer” in script. The barrel begins octagonally and transitions to round. The bore is smooth and about .56 caliber with rifle type sights. The stock is wound with thin cord at the wrist.
This musket looks like it has seen a fight or two. The steel parts are dark with age. The markings remain legible. The stock has nice grain and is wound with cord at the wrist, possibly shoring up a crack. The bore is smooth and dark. The action remains strong.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 46 inches.

Caliber: .56
