Description:
SHORTENED, Tack Decorated SPRINGFIELD TRAPDOOR

Model 1884 Rifle in .45-70 GOVT

Here we present an antique Shortened & Tack Decorated U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle in .45-70 GOVT, made by the Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts. This rifle was manufactured in 1884, during the height of the Indian War and not long after the Custer massacre. The serial number on this example dates to 1884. After the Civil War, the War Department wanted a breech-loading rifle. To be specific, it wanted a breech-loading rifle that would chamber a self-primed, metallic cartridge. Amazingly, despite the adoption of the ill-fated Model 1882 Chaffee-Reese Bolt Action Magazine Rifle, new models of trapdoor rifles continued to be produced and used all the way through the mid-1890s, until finally, the Krag-Jorgensen was adopted. The U.S. continued to see unrest and conflict with the displaced Native Americans during this time, including the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29th, 1890. Trapdoors continued to see use all the way through the Spanish American War.

This one features a barrel that was shortened long ago. The cut is a bit uneven and, though smoothed over with use and patinated with age, the saw marks may still be observed. The front sight was removed with that foremost piece of barrel and the rear sight was removed as well. The leather thong pads the cleaning rod against the fore end cap. The right side of the butt stock is decorated with tacks. This is an interesting piece modified during the period of use and decorated in the fashion of what may be considered a “blanket gun” or Indian rifle.

The overall condition is very good. The blue finish has turned gray over time. The markings are clear. The stock shows much use and remains solid. The bore is in good condition with strong rifling. The action remains excellent.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 26-1/2 inches.
