W.W. GREENER Double Barrel SxS HAMMER Shotgun
Nicely Engraved 12 Gauge Shotgun
Here we present a W. W. Greener Double Barrel Side by Side Hammer Shotgun in 12 Gauge, manufactured circa 1878 in Birmingham, England. The Greener family has been involved with gunmaking from 1829 to the present day. Greener served his apprenticeship with John Gardner in Newcastle prior to working for Joseph Manton, who was probably the best gunmaker in England in the early 1800s. In 1829 he set up his own shop in Newcastle making percussion muzzle loading sporting and military shotguns and rifles, as well as harpoon guns for the Dundee Whalers. He moved to Birmingham in 1844. The family business continues to this day with his great grandson.
This one is marked “W. W. GREENER” on either side of the frame. Surrounding are engraved scenes with bird dogs. The top of the barrel is marked “W.W. GREENER. St. MARYS WORKS BIRMINGHAM”.
The overall condition is good. The steel parts have a gray patina. The markings are clear. The numbers match. The stock has been repaired at the wrist. The bores are smooth and bright. The actions remain strong and crisp.
