Description:
For use on Springfield rifles. This bayonet was designed by General Rice. It actually was kind of a good idea but it just didn't work out. The idea was that it would be a combination bayonet/digging tool. It really didn't do either very well. For one thing, the high brass didn't like it because it looked goofy in parades having a shovel on the end of a gun, and in the field it didn't work so good because soldiers were prone to leave it on the rifle while they were trying to dig a hole, thus either plugging the muzzle or even possibly bending the bbl if they got into rocky terrain. These were used for a short time by a couple of different units. Anyway, it makes for a very good collectable. These are in VG+ condition. They have some age markings to them but are still very nice. No dings and alot of blue remaining on the handle. A very unique item for anyone with a Springfield collection.
