Description:
This is a rare Colt Model 1861 Navy revolver with fluted cylinder.  Colt manufactured only about 39,000 revolvers of this model and the fluted cylinders are quite scarce.  This cased set came from an estate in England and is accompanied by a Colt company letter, which indicates that the gun was shipped to the Washington Arsenal on February 1, 1862.   The gun was part of a batch of 500 ordered by the union army.   This is a .36 caliber revolver with a 7.5 inch round barrel.  It has one piece walnut grips and brass hardware.  This 1861 Navy revolver is historically relevant because of it's use in the Civil War, but the fluted cylinder has an interesting stamp which reads "Overland Express."  The Overland Express was a passenger/mail service that ran from St. Joseph, MO to Sacramento, CA.  Wells Fargo actually owned and operated the business from 1866 to 1869.  It is a well known fact that there were armed guards on those stagecoaches because they were the subject of frequent robberies.   Short barreled shotguns were the preferred weapon, but one can assume that the guards and drivers carried sidearms as well.  This cased set includes a bullet mold, a tin of caps, silver cleaning rod and a copper powder flask.  A very nice addition to any Civil War or western gun collection.   Consult Proxibid archives for comparable pricing.

The revolver is in good antique condition, but no blue finish and little varnish on the grips.  All numbers match and markings are clear.  The action is excellent.
