Description:
TRENTON LOCOMOTIVE & MACHINING CO M1861 Musket

Civil War Infantry Rifle-Musket from New Jersey!

Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1861 Rifle-Musket, made by J.T. Hodge and A.M. Burton at the Trenton Locomotive & Machining Co. in Trenton, New Jersey, in 1864. The M1861 is representative of the “everyman’s” rifle during the American Civil War. About 1.5 million rifle-muskets were made in the U.S., over 800,000 of which were made by the Springfield Armory. Estimates vary, but Flayderman estimates that 11,495 were made at the Trenton Locomotive & Machine Company. This was the last hurrah of the rifle-musket as arms development and tactics rapidly advanced during the short period of the American Civil War. Nevertheless, the 1861 represented new technology as it was made for use with the Minié ball, a hollow based, conical projectile that was small enough to quickly push down the muzzle of a rifled barrel, and expanded to create a good gas seal unlike a solid round ball.

This .58 caliber rifle’s lock is marked “1864” and “U.S./TRENTON”. The top of the butt plate is also marked “US”. The left side of the barrel is proof marked “V/P/Eagle head. The left stock flat bears two faint inspector cartouches as well as a stamp that reads “J.T. HODGE”, one of the makers.

The overall condition is good. The iron parts have a dark patina. The markings are legible. The rear sight was knocked off long ago. The walnut stock remains solid and faintly shows the inspectors’ and maker’s marks. The bore is in good condition with sharp rifling visible underneath a thick coat of dust. It is clear that this one has been kept and unfired for decades. The action remains excellent. Here is a great example of a Union infantry rifle-musket and a scarce contract model for the collector who may wish to represent all the makers in their collection.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 40 inches in length.
