Description:

CIVIL WAR Antique U.S. Model 1860 CAVALRY SABER

Made by Emerson & Silver of Trenton, NJ in 1865

Here we present an antique Emerson & Silver U.S. Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber, made in 1865 in Trenton, New Jersey. The Model 1860 succeeded the Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber, nicknamed “Old Wristbreaker”. The “light” versus “heavy” designation had less to do with the weight or size of the saber rather than the kit and purpose of the type of cavalry unit. The light cavalry was more agile and served many different purposes both on and off the battlefield, such as reconnaissance.

The ricasso is marked “U.S/J.F./1865 on one side, “J.F.” being the initials of the government inspector. The other side is marked “SILVER/TRENTON/N.J.”

The condition is very good. The handle’s leather and braided wire grip remains tight. The brass guard has a dark patina. The scabbard is nickel plated with a thin spot from wear against clothing or horse tackle.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is inches.

Overall condition as seen in photos.
