Engraved by Colt Master Engraver, Howard Dove, in 1989, five years before his death at age 52, this unique Colt Single Action Army revolver was produced by the Colt Custom Shop under the supervision of Al DeJohn, and was sold at the Colt Collectors meeting in St. Louis that year. It features a special order 8 inch barrel, a black powder frame, and one piece walnut grips. It is engraved in the Cuno Helfricht style with C+ coverage and chambered for the .44/40 Winchester cartridge. Howard Dove was considered to be one of the mnost talented American contemporary engravers of Colt firearms before his untimely death, and was known as the official engraver of the Colt Collectors Association. After leaving Colt's employ in 1985, he returned to his native Virginia and did custom work for Colt, Winchester and many celebrates such as Sammy Davis Jr., Hank Willaims Jr., Tom Sellick, and others. This gun, serial number SA0089, is surely one of Howard's finest, and has just come on the market now after 30 years in private ownership. It comes with a factory letter by Kathy Hoyt and a walnut display case by Jerry Jacobs of the American Display Company. An absolutely beautiful Colt, and a true work of art.
