Pump Action Rifle Made in 1904
Here we present a Colt Lightning .22 Rimfire Slide Action Rifle, made in 1904, in Hartford, Connecticut. This was Colt’s entry into the pistol caliber rifle and carbine market, which was absolutely dominated by Winchester at this time. Pistol caliber rifles were instrumental in the hands of those settling the West, as they were able to carry one type of ammunition to feed both their long gun and their sidearm. It also enabled a rifle to be stoked with the maximum number of cartridges, sacrificing power for capacity, useful when outnumbered at close range. The Colt Lightning was successful, but never approached the numbers that Winchester’s lever actions were able to achieve.
This specimen is chambered in .22 rimfire compared very well against Winchester’s Model 1873 in .22 (which was even heavier than the larger calibers since less material came out of the barrel!).
The overall condition is good. The foregrips on these were somewhat delicate and this one was wired together after it cleaved in two long ago. The seam between the two halves is smooth as they rubbed together with use. The bore is serviceable. It is dim with worn rifling. The action is excellent.
