This is a type I musket fitted with the long range folding ladder rear sight and brass nosecap. The weapon is in fine condition with good sharp markings on the lock and barrel, both dated 1858. A;ll metal surfaces are clean semi-bright steel with just the lightest speckling of tarnish, but no rust pitting. Metal parts have not been cleaned or polished. The stock also in fine condition showing its original arsenal oil finish and two fine Harpers Ferry inspection cartouches at the left flat. Stock and barrel also have additional 'WCK' block letter inspection stamps. Stock has good strong contours around lock and opposite flat, ramrod channel also fine. The rifled .58 caliber bore also fine as are the complete Maynard tape primed lock mechanics. All original parts including screws, sling swivels and ramrod. Only about 12,000 MOdel 1855 rifle-muskets were manufactured at Harpers Ferry and saw extensive use early in the Civil War. Surviving specimens in fine condition like this example are becoming much harder to find on the collector's market. SOLD Antique: Yes |
