Description:
Manufactured from 1932 until 1952, the Harrington & Richardson Model 999 Sportsman double-action .22 caliber revolver was the firm's top-of-the-line rimfire revovler.  H&R loaded these revovlers with features to compete with all of the best .22 caliber revolvers of the period.  This beautiful top-break revolver features a gloss-blued factory finish with a color-case hardened hammer, a 9 shot "safety-rim" cylinder, a 6" inch ribbed barrel, a finger-rest trigger guard, an automatic cylinder stop, an automatic ejector, adjustable front and rear sights, and a bird's head grip frame with a 1-piece checkered American Walnut grip.  The cylinder is also a quick-release design, requiring only the press of a button mounted on the left side of the barrel assembly just ahead of the cylinder.  The H&R Double Action Sportsman quickly earned a reputation for being very well made, reliable, and very accurate.  With most high-end .22 caliber revolvers of time being swing-out cylinder designs, the top-break Model 999 Sportsman really stood out from the rest.  This particular example is serial number 80018 and was manufactured in 1938, prior to WW2.  It is an all-original and matching gun in excellent condition overall.  All of the factory numbered parts are matching, including the frame, barrel assembly, top latch, cylinder, and cylinder star.  This Sportsman has obviously spent most of it's life in storage and has been fired very little since leaving the factory.  The original gloss blue factory finish is still very attractive and bright, and if not for the finish wear on the cylinder it would rate 96 to 97%.  As you can see from the pictures, the cylinder shows the most finish wear/flaking by a big margin, likely a result of the different heat treatment or the steel composition making the finish less durable.  The original case colors on the hammer are still in excellent shape, with nice bright colors showing on both sides.  The bore in this H&R is pristine and mirror-bright.  The rifling still shows sharp lands and grooves and there are zero visible imperfections.  The nine chambers in the cylinder are equally as clean.  The original checkered American Walnut 1-piece grip is in excellent condition as well, free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major dings/dents.  The checkering on the sides and backstrap is still crisp and clean.  All of the controls on this Model 999 are in perfect working order, and the action is smooth and perfectly "in time" whether it is worked in single or double action.  As you can see from the picture provided of the rear of the cylinder, the beautiful machining of the star is in perfect shape and it does not show any mechanical wear.  We have no doubt the internals are in excellent condition as well.  This Sportsman should fire just as reliably and accurately as the day it left the factory 81 years ago.  If you have been looking for a really nice vintage .22 revolver for your collection this H&R Double-Action Model 999 Sportsman would be a superb choice.
