Description:
This is a beautiful 5-screw Smith & Wesson K-38 Target Masterpiece revolver in .38 Special manufactured in 1951.  We know it was factory refinished by Smith & Wesson in December of 1975, as it is marked on the grip frame "12/75" along with a boxed "R-S".  The K-38 Target Masterpiece (pre-Model 14) was manufactured from 1946 until 1957 when it became the Model 14.  The K-38 .38 Special revolver is a square-butt 5-screw K-frame revolver that features a factory gloss-blue finish, a 6" inch barrel with a narrow rib, a Patridge front sight, a mircrometer adjustable rear sight, and "diamond" checkered Walnut grips.  It was Smith & Wesson's companion revolver to the K-32 and K-17 revolvers, and was their top-of-the-line regular production target revolver in .38 Special.  The K-38 Target Masterpiece quickly became a favorite of target shooters and sportsman all over the country as it was a well-made, reliable, and supremely accurate gun.  This particular example is serial number K 112047, and is in excellent condition overall.  It obviously was in very good shape with cosmetic finish issues when it was sent to the factory for refinishing, as there is no evidence of heavy buffing, the corners and edges are still sharp, and the factory stampings are crisp and clean.  The factory blue finish rates 97%, with the deductions coming from a few minor handling marks, some minor finish wear on the barrel at the muzzle, and some handling marks and a very faint drag line on the cylinder.  The case colors on the hammer and trigger are beautiful, with nice bright colors showing on both parts.  The original checkered "diamond" factory grips on this gun are the correct type for the gun and in great shape, but do not number to this gun.  All of the controls on this Smith are in perfect working order, and the action is silky smooth and perfectly "in time".  These 1950's prodcution guns really have to be felt to be truly appreciated.  The trigger on this K-38 is exceptional in single-action operation, breaking like a glass rod with a very light pull.  This K-38 should be just as relaible and accurate as the day it left the factory.  If you have been looking for one of these early 5-screw Target Masterpieces here is your chance to get a handsome example with excellent mechanics at a great price.
