The 657 was intended to allow the shooter to have a revolver that had far better resistance to rust and wear than the original carbon-steel Model 57, much like the 629 is to the Model 29. This is a rare “No Dash” variation. It has the Product Code 103952. Features normally included are a 4-inch barrel, stainless steel finish, target stocks (grips), target sights, .400-inch smooth combat trigger, and a .500-inch target hammer. This is given on the original box as “4 S TS TS CT TH” where the “4 S” stands for 4-inch stainless. Instead of the original target stocks, this 657 comes with a nice set of smooth rosewood grips. The Model 657, like the 629, has been used for everything from hunting to target shooting. It has also been used by law enforcement, although never on an “as issue” basis. This one is in good shape. The cylinder face has some powder burns although the bore is essentially clean. There are minor wear marks in the finish on the barrel and frame in a couple of spots. None of these are anything to worry about. The old S&W boxes used the Julian calendar to indicate the date of production. This appears as a four-digit number under the heading “Spec. Ord.” The first digit is the last number in the year. The other three digits indicate the numbered day out of the 365 days in the year upon which the gun was produced. The number here is 6052. Since the 657 (sku 103952) was produced between 1986 and 1987, this indicates that the revolver here was produced on the 52nd Day of 1986 or February 21st, 1986. One noteworthy aspect of this beautiful firearm is that, unlike later S&W models, this one has no trigger lock. This is a desirable feature of the older S&W revolvers and the expression “pre-lock” is a common denotation of this feature. This revolver would be an excellent addition to any S&W owner’s collection. Also included is a very nice leather paddle holster made by Safari Land.
