Description:
Here is a very scarce U.S Model 1855 rifle-musket Type II with the iron stock patchbox manufactured at the U.S. Federal Harpers Ferry Arsenal in 1859. Only slightly more than 12,000 Model 1855 muskets were manufactured at Harpers Ferry and saw much hard service early in the Civil War. Surviving patch box specimens are extremely scarce, especially in fine condition. This example has fine semi-bright iron overall, just showing the slightest age patina and spots of scattered black tarnish, it has not been cleaned or polished. All markings are sharp including the matching 1859 dates on lock and barrel. The stock retains its original dark arsenal applied oil finish and has not been cleaned or sanded, has good strong contours and two sharp Harpers Ferry inspection cartouches at the left flat. There is no damage to the stock except for a little handling wear above the rear lock screw. All parts are original to the gun incuding correct rear sight, screws, sling swivels, and ramrod. The rifled bore is fine and the lock mechanics are perfect. These patch box Model 1855 muskets have always been scarce but are now very difficult to find in this untouched fine original condition. This would majka an excellent addition to any quality collection of Civil War longarms.
