Description:
This is a Lee-Metford bayonet that measures 16 1/2" overall with an 11 7/8" straight, double-edged blade. The blade ha an overall dull pewter-gray patina mottled with darker plum-brown, and also has moderate pinprick pitting at the tip. The ricasso is marked with “(crown ) / VR / 5 ’90 / WILKINSON LONDON" on the reverse and “(Broad Arrow) / WD / (crown) / 35 / W" on the obverse. The hilt has a single forward swept quillon with disk finial, and moderately worn walnut, two-rivet grips. The pommel has a functional latch stud with two distinct unit markings: “2 / LCS . C /598" (crossed out), and “I YC / 16976" (first Lancashire & Cheshire, then 1st Yeoman Cavalry). The bayonet comes with a worn, but intact, buff leather scabbard that has darkly mottled metal throat and chape furniture. The leather is in very good overall. This is a fine example of a desirable Lee-Metford bayonet with unit markings.
