Description:
SALE PENDING RECEIPT OF FUNDS!!
Here is a rare New Hampshire attic find. During a house clean out this old revolver was found and the owner gave it to the clean out person as partial payment for his work.. He subsequently sold it to my consignor. who now offers this very rare Colt to you, It is a Colt Model 1877 a double-action revolver manufactured by Colt's Patent Fire Arms from January 1877 to 1909 for a total of 166,849 revolvers. The Model 1877 was offered in three calibers, which lent them three unofficial names: the "Lightning", the "Thunderer", and the "Rainmaker". The principal difference between the models was the cartridge in which they were chambered: the "Lightning" being chambered in .38 Long Colt; the "Thunderer" in .41 Colt. Both models had a six-round ammunition capacity. An earlier model in .32 Colt known as the "Rainmaker" was offered in 1877. The M1877 was designed by one of the inventors of the M1873 Colt Single Action Army, William Mason, as Colt's first attempt at manufacturing a double-action revolver. The M1877 was the first successful US-made double-action cartridge revolver.
The M1877 was offered from the factory in two basic finishes: nickel-plated or a case-hardened frame with a blue barrel and cylinder. The revolver was available in barrel lengths from 2.5″ to 7.5″ and was available with or without the ejector rod and housing. The shorter barreled versions without the ejector rod were marketed as "shopkeeper's specials". This revolver is a Rainmaker in .32 Colt and has a 3-1/2 inch barrel and shows indication the receiver is case colored. Little to no bluing remains and the exterior is a mottled mixture of grey patina and darker colors. The Gutta-Percha grips are smooth and worn on the lower right grip but there is still visible checkering pattern up to and around the Rampant Colt on both sides. of the grips. They are fully intact. The end of the cylinder take down pin is well worn and somewhat marred. There is a hole to the right of the pin where an ejector rod housing fit to push out the empties. Consequently it is probable this gun started life with a longer barrel and either the barrel was cutdown to 3-1/2 inches and the front sight repositioned or the revolver was rebarreled.  I see no indication there was an ejector rod housing in place but the work was probably done so long ago that evidence it was on the barrel has disappeared along with the finish.. According to the Colt Site this revolver was made in 1898. It is reported there were only about 200 Rainmakers made and far fewer have survived the years to be known examples in collections so this is a very rare example of the Colt M1877. .
