THIS IS THE NO-LONGER-OFFERED “GEMMER” FRONTIER HAWKEN-STYLE MODEL 1874 IN .45-70 CALIBER, #59XX, MADE C. 1982-83. This is a high serial number Farmingdale, New York made rifle and might be one of the last before the company moved to Big Timber, Montana. J. P. Gemmer purchased the original Hawken Shop in 1864. Soon after this time with the development of cartridge firing arms, Gemmer converted some Trapdoor Springfields, Spencers and Sharps to “Hawken-Style” rifles with butt stocks like those seen on the famed percussion Plains Rifles and “keyed” forends with wood wiping rods under the barrel. For a time Shiloh offered a Gemmer style rifle. Few were made and today they are seldom seen. I’ve offered a small handful of these over the last twenty or so years and I’d have to say this is one of the finest and most beautiful I’ve seen. It sports a 30” heavy barrel giving the rifle a weigh of approx. 12 lbs. Most Gemmer rifles had blued barrels where this one has a lovely browned finish barrel. The stock is fitted with a deep crescent butt plate plus toe plate on the bottom- all also a matching brown. The receiver is nicely case colored and has double set triggers. The left side of the butt stock has a cheek piece in the Hawken style. The forend is double-keyed and the barrel has browned wiping rod thimbles attached to the bottom of the barrel. The rear sight is the ornate Hawken buckhorn type with elevator bar. It is matched with a Beach folding globe front sight. Best of all is the walnut which is a lustrous deep reddish-brown color with full fancy fiddle back grain from butt plate to forend tip! There is also some stylish contouring of the bottom of the stock just forward of the toe plate- a class act. The walnut also appears to have at least a AA finish. Screws are fire-blued. Overall the rifle is in near new condition. There were not many built like this one!
