Description:
May be an amalgamation of parts, but the receiver is certainly within the range of Rod Bayonet serial numbers, S# 9175. Yes, Sedgley altered serial numbers, but he usually took the given number, scrubbed it and then stamped his own number in the cocking raceway. There is aboslutly no sign of this serial number have being altered or removed. Sedgley used a diffrent script than springfield did and usually removed the arsenal roll marks. The script on this receiver is correct for the time period , the thinkness of the receiver is there, the U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1903 is all there in the correct style script of the period. I can't say wether the bolt is original, but the bolt handle exhibits the straight verticle nature of the early handles before they started to sweep them back.
Did Sedgley re-heat treat it? Who Knows. Is it blued? Yes, it is blued but blueing can be removed and a the correct period finnish reapplied. Are any of the other internal parts Rod bayonet range? Couldn't tell you, thats up to you to figure out.
Ordinance bomb on the barrel is clearly marked as well as the R.F. Sedgley Phila. P.A. and the circle S.
While I appreciate the history of this what I have in my hands, I am not a collector. I was going to build a Griffin and Howe styled 400 whelen from the action but due to the historical signifigance I will sell it.
