Description:
Original Rare WW2 Colt 1911A1 Commercial/Military in excellent condition with 98-99% of the original finish intact. Not import marked, no rust or pitting on metal, no cracks on grips, great bore, functions fine.
According to Charles W. Clawson's book, this Colt is 1 of 6,575 commercial government model M1911A1's that were converted to military production, approximate serial number range 860,003-867,000. Due to the need of pistols for the war effort in 1942 Colt stopped their commercial production and unsold commercial pistols were transfered to military production. During that process, the C prefix serial number was peened flat and new military serial number along with other military proofs such as "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" and "M1911A1 U.S. ARMY" were added.
In this gun, frame is correctly marked "S" to denote commercial sales, instead of the "G" which denotes government contract. Some had commercial barrels that had "S" in front of the lug and some had military ones with large "G" in front of the lug. In this case, the barrel is "G" proofed in front of the lug and Colt 45 Auto on the left side - which is correct for this gun. Both slide and frame are proofed with a "P" of the same size as it should be. The frame and the slide have different but very close serial numbers. The serial number on the slide is in the 867XXX number range, so the numbers are very close.
That was a very common occurence due to field cleaning of the guns during wartime.
A gun in this condition, with same serial numbers on the frame and slide would bring somewhere around $7,000 to $8,000
