Description:
Winchesters Model of 1873 "Third Model" Special Order .44-40 Lever Action Sporting Rifle. The serial number of this example is 1562XX placing date of manufacture in 1883-84. This Rifle was ordered as Case Hardened, 30 inch. The rifle also appears to have a "Fancy Walnut Stock" and a "Hunter Front Sight". This Rifle will letter with the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, Wyoming. Overall condition is very good with the finish mostly Silvered out on the receiver with traces of Case Colors in protected areas. The Barrel and Magazine tube have toned to an even patina. The bore is way above average with strong rifling and shine. The bore has the expected scattered light pitting. The bore will rate an 8 on a 1 to 10 scale, well cared for! The action is tight, smooth and mechanically perfect. The Brass follower has a very nice mustard patina. The wood to metal fit is perfect with typical hits, dings and hunting marks. A very rare early third model untouched, not fooled with and in .44.
