Description:
Very rare Bowie knife by American knife maker J.D. Chevalier. Made in 1849 for California gold rush.  According to Norm Flayderman:  "It appears that John Chevalier of New York, a fine maker of surgical instruments, was the only American cutler to take a merchandising advantage of this great migration".  Chevalier marked his knives "California Knife".  You won't ever find an American made "California Knife" except the ones made in New York by Chevalier. The known San Francisco knife makers didn't begin making knives until 1854.

7-1/2 inch Blade has grind marks.  Original sheath has been repaired at break near tip. Good strong knife.
