Gerbruder Merkel of Suhl Germany is an incredible gun maker. They make all manner of fine guns that run the gamut from entry level side by side guns to more elaborate, fully engraved ejector over under guns like the one being reviewed here. The Merkel 201E is a finely made shotgun with near full coverage game-scene engraving on the action, a 3 piece, slim, field-style forend, ventilated rib, and ejectors. This gun, sn37660 built in 1953, is in excellent condition and is the perfect upland 12ga. with 30” IC/F chokes (my favorite pheasant chokes) having mirror shiny bores, ribs tight, action tight on the breech face and hinge pin, single selective trigger that functions properly, cocking indicators, great stock dimensions and is a very attractive German made over/under. These are investment quality firearms that continue to gain value as you enjoy the use. These fine over/under shotguns do just as well on the sporting clays or trap field, and with the fixed chokes and spreader loads from rstshells the gun would be a very versatile sporting clays gun indeed! The stock dimensions are modern and the gun has a parallel comb that will minimize recoil to the face shooting heavy loads or high volumes of shells at the range. We are all aware of the top-quality engineering and materials that go into German made products and this Merkel is a great demonstration of what we expect from the Germans along with some very nice gun art in the hand-engraved scroll and game scenes.
