Henry Bales began his gunmaking career working for Forsyth & Co in about 1808 and opened his own business in 1811 at 2 Upper James Street, London. He was probably the father of John Bales who appears to have taken over the London business, and almost certainly was the father of George William Bales. In about 1814 Henry Bales was recorded at Cornhill, Ipswich. It appears that Henry Bales may have moved Colchester in about 1825, as there are guns dated to 1825 and engraved Henry Bales, Ipswich & Colchester that have been seen, but no other records are known to exist. Henry Bales retired in about 1830, he died in 1835 and G W Bales took over the business. He appears to have moved it to Tavern Street where he was recorded in 1838. This type of pistol was very popular from the 18th and into the 19th Centuries, in Europe, as well as the colonies. It was made primarily for self-defense or for an officer’s weapon, and very well would tell stories if it could. This pistol features a banded accent at the breech of the barrel and a platinum lined vent. The top of the barrel is marked “H. BALES IPSWICH” and the letters are filled with the white metal as well. The hammer is shapely with a distinct aesthetic. The hammer, trigger guard, lock, barrel tang are all nicely engraved. The stock is hand-checkered. The ramrod is captive on a swivel so as not to be lost while on a horse, a very much appreciated feature primarily found on military pistols of the day. Simple blade front and notch rear sight when many similar pistols of the day had no sights and were meant to be point-and-shoot. The overall condition is near fine. The bore is smooth. The action is excellent. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 8-1/2 inches. Caliber: .66 Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe.
