Description:
A very nice example of the only muzzle loading flintlock rifle produced by either of the U.S. National Armories. With it's graceful lines and brass furniture, it is more in the style of a Kentucky rifle than a military musket. It is the first U.S. Military long gun to have a rifled bore. This one is dated 1815, has a 36 inch barrel and is .54 caliber. It has not been reconverted to flint, and is original in every respect. We strongly suspect that it was one of the firearms furnished to the Cherokee Indian Nation in the 1830's when the "Trail of Tears" commenced toward their new home in Oklahoma. It is clearly stamped with the word "CHEROKEE" on top of the barrel. It has been suggested, that this Model of 1803, dated in the first year of production, was the type of gun carried by the Lewis & Clark Corp of Discovery Expidition. But this has not been proved and is considered doubtful. Regardless, it is considereed to be a very important shoulder arm in the development of America's military history.
