Description:
ANTIQUE SHARPS New Model 1863 .50-70 GOVT Carbine

Provenance: Spenger’s Fresh Fish Grotto!

Here we present an antique Sharps New Model 1863 Carbine, made circa 1864, then converted to 50-70 Govt circa 1867 for use in the West by the federal government. Over 100,000 Sharps rifles and carbines were purchased and used by the federal government during the American Civil War. In 1867, the Ordnance Department contracted with the Sharps Rifle Company for conversion of over 31,000 Sharps percussion carbines to the .50-70 breech loading configuration. These carbines were issued to the regular cavalry regiments on the western frontier and remained in service until they were replaced by the Springfield Model 1873 Carbine. The carbine has a blued barrel with casehardened barrel band, receiver, loading lever and butt plate. The stock and forearm are oil-finished black walnut. The carbine is fitted with the standard folding leaf rear sight and has a sling bar and ring mounted on the left side of the stock and receiver. The left side of the receiver is stamped with the two-line Sharps patent marks and the Lawrence and Sharps patent markings are stamped on the right side of the receiver. Ordnance sub-inspection marks are stamped on most components. They went on to experience some of the most exciting times in American history during the Indian Wars, the settling of the West, and the connecting of the coasts with the railroad.

Provenance: Spenger's Fresh Fish Grotto was a restaurant located in Berkeley, California at 1919 4th Street. For 128 years, Spenger’s served some of the Bay’s finest seafood to generations of stevedores, students, Nobel laureates, and everyone in between. At its high point, the former fish market turned restaurant claimed to be selling 3,500 pounds of fresh fish per day. Spenger’s was home to oysters, a cheap bar, ship parts and a treasure chest of antique guns. Basically, the elder Spengers would buy guns from widows in the area whose husbands had been collectors before they died. So, after 128 years, Berkeley said good-by to Spenger’s Fresh Fish Grotto on October 24, 2018, and the cache of guns inside were released to be purchased by the public. This gun is one of those from the cache.

The overall condition is good. The iron parts are gray. The markings are legible. The walnut stock shows a good inspector cartouche and has the “DFC” cartouche from the time of the cartridge conversion. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The action is functional, though there is no half-cock.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 22 inches.

Caliber: .50-70 GOVT
