Antique Engraved G.P. Foster Percussion Rifle
Box Lock Rifle from Rhode Island
Here we present an antique G.P. Foster Percussion Rifle, manufactured circa 1854-1856 in Bristol, Rhode Island. This company was the forerunner of the Bristol Firearms Co. George P. Foster Was the President with Ambrose E. Burnside as treasurer. They made locks and various other parts along with these rifles while developing the design for the Burnside Breechloading Carbine.
This rifle features a distinctive design. The mechanism is a boxlock with a side hammer, the enclosure for which seems very small and compact in comparison to this rifle’s single shot contemporaries. It has double set triggers for precision shots. The trigger guard doubles as a pistol grip. The frame is lightly engraved. This rifle’s slim overall contours would have made it very nice to carry.
The left side of the frame and top of the barrel are marked “G.P. FOSTER/BRISTOL/R.I.”
The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The markings are legible. The stock is in good shape. The bore is dark with distinct rifling. The action on this rifle is functional. The rear set trigger needs adjustment, though the action works just fine without it.
