Antique “L. POMEROY” US Model 1816 MUSKETOON
Made in 1824 & Updated to Percussion for Civil War
Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1816 Musketoon, made in 1824 on contract by Lemuel Pomeroy of Pittsfield, Massachusetts. This smoothbore .69 caliber musketoon would have originally been made in the flintlock format. Since it was a proven design with many still in service, many were updated to the percussion firing system. These were some of the most abundant weapons available to both sides, being in the hands of state militias in the first days of the American Civil War.
The lock is marked with a Federal Eagle over “L. POMEROY” and dated “1824” at the tail of the lock. The barrel is also dated “1824”. The left stock flat bears the remnant of an inspector cartouche. This was at one time a full-length musket and has since been cut down to a much handier length. The right side of the stock is decorated with tin buttons.
The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces are dark with age and weathering. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in good shape. The bore is dark. The action is strong.
