Description:
**SALE PENDING** (Layaway?)....Beautiful Tiffany U.S. Model 1850 Foot Officer's Civil War Sword (by Collins) , Scabbard, Belt, Belt plate and Sword Hangar. Description: This exquisitely decorated sword measures 38'' overall and bears a 32'' slightly curved single-edged blade with a 9'' false edge, wide stopped and narrow unstopped fullers and a narrow tapered spear-point tip. The reverse face of the ricasso is marked ''Collins & Co. / Hartford / Conn / 1862''. Either face of the blade is decorated by crisply detailed panels etched with ''U.S.'' lettering, panoplies of arms and elegant foliate scroll; a short etched foliate half-panel extends 3 3/8'' from the top of the ricasso on either side with the ''Tiffany / & Co. / New York'' address on the reverse face. The blade rates very fine to near excellent with few if any handling marks and flecks of smoky gray patina scattered across the surface as well as a few gray clouds at the tip. The point and edge are not service sharpened but are nearly immaculate with the slightest of burrs on the forward edge revealed under close inspection. The brass hilt consists of a pierced floral half-basket guard with a single branch obverse of the knuckle bow, a phrygian pommel and a black shagreen grip wound by twisted brass wire. The brass surfaces rate very good plus to excellent, the lightly polished surface patinaed to a reflective greenish-yellow and spotted by occasional flecks of ochre, gray and brown; a bit of light dinging can also be seen on the rear of the pommel. The shagreen rates excellent with few if any blemishes and the brass wire is whole and unblemished. The included belt is glossy black leather with brass fittings and a brass rectangular buckle cast-in-relief in a wreathed eagle design. The belt is in very good plus to excellent condition overall; the leather is whole and pliable with no cracking, flaking or separation, though it does exhibit scuffing at the edges and light but extensive surface wrinkling. The yellow brass fittings are mellowed by very light green-tinted brown patination and occasional hints of verdigris; the eagle relief is distinctly crisp and detailed. Finally, the included scabbard, consisting of a black leather body and three brass mounts, is in about very good condition; the body is whole but the leather does exhibit light crazing, instances of finish flaking and an area beginning to separate on the reverse face just above the tip mount. The mounts are patinated to a distinguished dark yellow with occasional darker areas of dusky gray and brown patina and a few impact dings on the tip. This lovely sword, complete with its belt assembly, will make a prized addition to any collection...WITH CONFIDENCE! S/H $30 (48 STATES). PayPal add 3.5% or use FRIENDS and FAMILY.
